The Special Olympics World Games will take place in Abu Dhabi in March 2019, showcasing the awe-inspiring abilities of athletes with intellectual disabilities, promoting the ideals of acceptance and inclusion through sport and celebrating the transformative power of Special Olympics. There will be over 7,000 athletes, 3,000 coaches, 24 sports representing 177 countries and 20,000 volunteers on hand from across the world. The Games will be broadcast across ESPN and will have an anticipated 500,000 spectators.
There are 225 athletes, 62 coaches, 31 staff/delegates attending as Special Olympics USA. Representing Special Olympics New York will be a delegation of 7 athletes, 2 coaches and 2 law enforcement torch runners.
These athletes have qualified at a state-level competition with a gold medal in order to earn their spot on Team USA. They will travel to Abu Dhabi for a week-long experience including Opening Ceremonies, high-level competitions, health & education at Olympic Village and will enjoy the culmination of their hard work in the Closing Ceremony Celebrations.
