Why Special Olympics is so important to me, and who this Stevie guy is to me??? Here's a little background....I started working for Putnam ARC in the summer of 1995 and attended my 1st Special Olympics event that Oct..... It was at that bowling event I was hooked- the energy, and love that could be felt, it was something I never experienced before- the athletes, coaches, families and volunteers- all full of enthusiasm. After that event I got my coaching cert, one after another........... I fell in love with the organization and the athletes- Stevie being 1 of them. His infectious smile, love for life and unconditional love for his friends and family. Stevie became a huge part of my life- we went to the circus, my college, attended my wedding and I coached him in several sports. Stevie would call me every Monday night- at home or college- and I made sure I was home to get his call. Stevie's favorite event was swimming- he swam the regional and state levels, always smiling and loving every minute of the events. My Stevie passed away in 2007 leaving a huge hole in my heart, and in 2012 I decided to take my 1st plunge in honor of my Stevie, to support the athletes I love working with. The energy at the Plunge is the same as every Special Olympics event I have been too- full of love and enthusiasm!!! My Stevie, and all my athletes over the 23 years is the reason I will again be jumping in the waters of Sharpe Reservation. Our athletes have year round sports at no cost to them, so any donation you can provide to help these athletes will greatly be appreciated.
